Here's a cheap and simple idea for storing small badges, in this case my GDR glider/model aircraft badges. (Any such idea coming from me has to be simple, as I have two left hands with 5 thumbs each. ) I was never quite happy with the way the screwback badges sat in Riker mounts, and I don't want to keep them loose in boxes, either.
Collectors of GDR medals will be familiar with these plastic medal cases:
They are still super-common, so that many sellers of GDR (and other) militaria use them for packing purposes; they are also sold - often in lots - on eBay. I had several empty ones lying around at home.
I got myself some grey cardboard and cut out rectangular pieces sized to fit the cases in length and width, plus a little extra at the top and bottom to be folded over. Then I attached the badges to the cardboard (just make little holes for screwback badges and stickpins and slits for pinback ones):
And there you have it. Not spectacular, but cheap, practical and neat enough:
