    Looks like a crown and single pip, so a Lieutenant Colonel rank. I would think a little too much webbing kit for a senior officer, even at Normandy. Probably more realistically reflects a junior officer, maybe Captain. Here's a photo below of Lt Col David Niven at Normandy 1944, showing that senior officer style.

    Yes, I get you meaning. I have tried to find some illustrations of British officers on D-Day to use as a reference but they are not that common on the whole.
