    Would the Americans have marked them this way?

    Not 100% sure, but I believe the Americans used the erkennungsmarke of the German and stamped that info (unit, bloodtype etc.) on the gravemarker.
    I don't think the US gravemarkers were stamped like this.

    It is an original grave marker from the American graves registration unit. Both Allied and Axis casualties had their graves marked in this way, US dogtags stamped GRS and with a number were also used. Its possible this fallen soldier was inducted into the 89th Infanterie Division and saw action in October-December 1944 firstly in the Hürtgenwald and then Wacht am Rhein.

    This is how I’m reading them (in order posted).

    Tag - (P?) Z. GREN. E & A. BTL. 40
    (P?) Z .Grenadier Ersatz und Ausbildungs Bataillon 40
    (mechanized?) .Infantry Replacement and Training Battalion 40
    (There’s a hole at the end, so might not be 40).

    Tag - (S?) t. kp. fus. ers. btl. 39
    (S?) T .Kompanie Füsilier Ersatz Bataillon 39
    (Stab?) Company Fusiler Replacement Battalion 39
