The examples I found around 20 years ago had been used to identify telegraph cables in a WW1 trench. As far as I know the PW idea is a modern myth.
I have never heard of this type of disk used for POW's either. I have seen this style of ww1 disk with the big numbers nailed on wooden boxes, and as fobs for keys but not in an systemic way looked like a unit level solution to me.
A Dutch company is selling something similar..
Origineel WWII Duits KZ Kinderlager Uckermark gevangenen plaatje – Oorlogsspullen.nl – Militaria shop
I have had a look at the website and I am curious where this seller got this information from. Why does he think this is an emarke from a concentration camp for kids?
The info provided by BC and Eike seems way more likely to me to be honest. The downside with these small dealers is that they are not always specialised in emarken and are prone to make mistakes.
The price is also a bit steep if you ask me.
Regards, Rik
Here is an example of a "Child Tag" from the Bundesarchiv the original caption read: Poland.- Resettlement of the civilian population. Toddler with dog tag
That dealer is on to a great money maker if people are crazy enough to pay that amount for his story. Save your money for something original.
Yea his prices are crazy...
Eike41, thanks for the pic.. I think you guys are right and these tags are or were used to mark equipment.
The one hole discs mentioned above are indeed used in the Uckermark kinderlager. These discs are dug up at the Uckermark site in the last two years , and there is a picture from a child wearing it on the camp site and a short movie from the guy who found a few discs there in 2018. So , I have no doubt these are used discs from Uckermark. That these discs are originally created for other purpose is very possible. The number style looks much older.
Since the uckermark site was a russian military base for a long time, these discs show up lately as the camp is empty now.
The picture at the top shows similair discs , but with two holes and a bit larger . Numbers style looks the same.
There is a site (in dutch) achter prikkerdraad ( behind barbwire) , which mentioned the same use of the disc and also shows a picture of one disc.
This is all from the early years of existense of the camp , because later on they used the camp for killing women and children from Ravensbruck
Interesting, the tag on the Achter prikkerdraad appears to use a similar font although they are only one holed. So it looks as though they have used very old stock of un-used items from earlier.
