Not all fighters of Red Army became participants of the Victory Parade. Some of them have no place on the Red square (approx. 11 mln.) In my opinion, there is no rewarding immediately during Parade. Replacement has been made beforehand. Bearing of awards of the old (screw) types did not correspond to currently in force army regulations. It is bad, when on the main parade of the country, epoch all soldiers are dressed in the different uniform (one in old-fashioned, others - in new, the third - in quilted jackets and leg-wrappings) and wearing different types of same orders. All should be IDENTICAL as a single powerful concentrated force!

The nicest engraving I've ever seen. I've often wondered if 'higher ups' got better engraving done or if it was just randomness.

I think just randomness because of I have an early Red Banner awarded to a Senior Sergeant with nice handwriting. Awards were already engraved at the mint and then divided over the seperate Fronts and Divisions. So at forehand it was impossible to say who will get which award. I'd say it's just the style of the engraver and some styles we prefer above others.

It is quite unusual how some recipients had several awards of the Order of the Red Banner. Some had the small white banner indicating “2”, “3”, so on, yet some didn’t have this, and were only engraved on the reverse to indicate another award. Was it all by chance, or was it only certain periods that these would be awarded?

    Default

I think by chance and by which front they were serving. The fronts which had more awards handed out quicker went through their stacks of awards (each front was provided with awards by the mint). So on some fronts lots of awards were handed out, on some less awards. If no more 2, 3 and upwards Red Banners were available anymore the regular Red Banner will had to do. In other cases the fronts with lots of leftover stock handed out their awards to other fronts with only few awards left, hence the inconsistency of serial numbers sometimes.
