Luna 9 (Луна-9), internal designation Ye-6 No.13, was an unmanned space mission of the Soviet Union's Luna program. On 3 February 1966 the Luna 9 spacecraft became the first spacecraft to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, or any planetary body other than Earth, and to transmit photographic data to Earth from the surface of another planetary body.
A 5" x 1.5" pennant-shaped red enamel medal with the Soviet State Emblem and the text: "СОЮЗ СОВЕТСКИХ СОНИАЛИСТИЦЕСКИХ РЕСПУБЛИК" (USSR) enclosed in a 7.5" x 3.5" blue velvet-lined case. On the reverse is an emblem representing the trip from the Earth to the moon with "ЯНВАРЬ 1966Г" (January 1966) engraved. Also, a 2" x 1.875" pentagonal-shaped medal engraved "ЯНВАРЬ 1966Г" in the center with the same text as above around. The reverse features the Soviet State Emblem trimmed in red enamel. A handsome display originally only presented to select Soviet dignitaries.
I am a big luna program fan. How fun is it to shot rockets and hit the moon to do science but to also spread these nice hexagonal medals around
