"In all my years as a soldier, I have never seen men fight so hard." - SS Obergruppenfuhrer Wilhelm Bittrich - Arnhem
Interesting, possibly awarded to someone in the 289th Guards Rifle Regiment in Nov. '43.
'Echoes of War' has #718209 awarded to an individual in that unit.
That is indeed very, very close.
Here are the researched documents for this award.
So from what I can make out…
He was Romets, Ivan Antonovich
Senior Lieutenant , Battery Commander of the 5th Guards Army, Parachute Division.
Born 1922 in Ukraine
Served in Red Army 1941 to 1947
He was awarded the following ;
Medal for Courage
Order of the GPW 1st Class
Oder of Alexander Nevsky
Prague Campaign medal
Victory Over Germany Medal
His Battery stopped fire from 2 machine guns and 3 Armoured cars killing 60 German soldiers.
On the Dniepr river they held off 6 attacks and killed 25 German soldiers
Please correct me if I’m wrong
Nick
