Soviet campaign medals and soldering...
I'm trying to grow my Soviet medal collection and I have a question regarding the Soldering of the rings to the medal.
1.) What did they use to solder the ring on to the medal? Was tin ever used?
Tin leaves a black residue and no one has ever given me a definitive answer as to whether or not variation 1's have back residue on them.
Thank you

you might not believe it, but it's mix: 1/3 of brass 2/3 of silver afaik
usual period 'silver soldering solution'

Thanks for the reply ph3s.
So...does this leave a black soldering smudge at all? I ask because I think about 90% of all the variation 1's that I see have some sort black smudge on them, obviously in various amounts. My personal opinion is that it would.

Re: Soviet campaign medals and soldering...
The silver in the solder will develope a black oxidation.
Tin by itself would not be used as it is to soft .

Re: Soviet campaign medals and soldering...
So, I should usually see a bit of black oxidation but not a lot of it. I mention tin because if I remember from another forum, a lot of the altered medals tin is used.

Re: Soviet campaign medals and soldering...
As Steve said, silver solder will oxidize and develop a black residue. It's actually a Good thing to see it-it shows age and authenticity. William
