    Greetings All

Picked up this piece of WW2 flak shrapnel that was found in a tool box aboard a RCAF 405 Squadron Halifax on its return from a raid on the Rhur in the summer of 1944. I found it in Alberta.

Somebody made it into a paper weight and attached a solid 20mm shell of some type. It is 78.6mm long and is about 19mm wide with the 6mm wide copper band about 20.4mm wide. From the base of the band it is 14mm to the shell base.

No fuse is present and it looks solid so ... practice round??. Cannot find any markings on it.

Just curious if it is German or allied. Perhaps the chap picked it up during the war and decided to add it to the flak fragment.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Best Regards
    Rob

This looks very much like a 20mm Hispano ( Allied ) round. Here's something similar, posted by BBF in 2019...

    Hi again!
    20mm/2cm are terribly common!
This one looks like a US Anti-Aircraft Training round from after the War.
Someone that specialises in collecting 20mm would probably know more

HE it's not If there's no fuse. Could still be a hispano Ball or practice, or an Oerlikon, or any of a Numbers of others. To me they all look the same

If its only glued on you could separate it from the shrapnel ( which is a far more interesting piece )

    Hello

A machinist has flattened the base and large machine screws were used to attach the 20mm shell. Definitely used as a paper weight.

Unfortunately, I have no other info on the item besides the old typed label that was originally taped on the base.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Cheers
    Rob
