Need Help Identifying Unknown Bronze Artillery Shells with Beautiful Trench Art
Hi, I'm new here and have nearly no experience with war relics. But I do know a bit in general about antiques and so I am looking for a bit of help identifying these shell casings.
I don't even know if this is the right place to be posting this, hope so.
You can view a few pictures I took of them Here.
A few facts I can tell you is that:
1: the art is most certainly done by hand as the designs are the same in general...but not exactly perfect.
2: They are from 1942.
3: They still have the white phosphorous inside from firing.
4: The firing pins are still in place.
5: They have a ton of other markings on their bases that I have no idea how to identify.
6: 40mm bore, 280mm for the tall ones, 200mm for the short one.
Any help I could get as to what these are, where they are from, rarity and anything else would be really helpful.
Thanks.

The smaller one looks like a 2 pounder shell and the other 2 look like 40mm Bofors AA shells. The stuff you call white phos is just dirt and probably old metal polish residue, white phos or WP is very nasty and will burn on contact with air.

Looks like British 2 prd shell cases. Have a look here:
37MM AND 40MM GUNS IN BRITISH SERVICE

You are right there...but I do remember reading that the rocky outcroppings of many of the pacific islands were bleached white from phosphorous in explosive shells...I guess I was thinking this was the same case?
AA shells huh...one of my friends said they reminded him of AA shells from today's navy...so that's interesting...any idea the rarity of these kinds of things?
I could only find something kinda like them here on item 4252:
www.stampcircuit.com - Coin Auction Map | | MILITARIA COLLECTIONS & ACCUMULATIONS Stamp Auctions | Philatelic Auction | Numismatic Auction | Philately | Postal | Stamps | Stamp Auctioneers | Philatelic Dealers |
Would these have been used by the Greeks and supplied by the British or by the British during the attempted invasion of Greece to defend it from Hitler?
Thanks again.

Hmmm...so now that I've got them...what do I do with them.
hey are really cool looking but even as somewhat of an antiques collector I don't collect war relics...
Obviously the shells themselves are not hard to come by.
Are they worth anything? Probably only to a real collector I would say from my bit of experience...but am I wrong?

Re: Need Help Identifying Unknown Bronze Artillery Shells with Beautiful Trench Art
Trench Art is a specialised collecting field, but it is popular in it's own right. Value would be about £20 each.
We have a free sales and wants area at the bottom of the forum homepage.
Cheers, Ade.
