Hello
What are your thoughts on this Trench Shell?
* Does the shell read (8 28 SS) or (8 28 44) ?
* It has some cracks
* It doesn't look like it was ever altered
* I hope this is the right section to put this in?
Thank you
Tony

An American 75mm Cartridge Case marked SS! Hmmm, I will consult with Sherlock Holmes, but strongly suspect a post war fantasy piece.
That's real Poo embossing then! And you are supposed to be on holiday! You'll get shouted at!!!!
Do you think the shell is related to the liberation of Marseille?
Marseille was liberated 8/28/44
I don't think the SS were in Marseille
This doesn't remind me of a fantasy piece like the SS pocket knives and SS rings that were massed produced.
If this piece is fantasy, it sure lacks a lot of eagles and swastikas
It seems to dull for fantasy
Thanks again for the help

Tony,
I think that the SS is actually 44. I have a letter that I thought originally had something to do with the SS but after looking at it more closely it was actaully dated 1944..
I think it is safe to say that this is a nice untouched trench art piece.
best regards
Smitty
I would agree that it is a post war fantasy piece.

I do not think it is a post war phantasy piece. It takes a lot of skill, tooling and time to make this and then it would be more profitable to put lots of swasticas on it, as noted before. The ss probably is 44, as stated by others. The clue will most likely be in the oak leaves and acorns, they are not there by accident. Is it purely decorative, or does it e.g. refer to a town or does it have a symbolic meaning?
