Just happy about this rare SG98 I just bought from an old french collector. A shortened SG 98 with stamp of the grenadier guards regiment with a scabbard of a SG 84/98 (but made originally at the time, fits perfect). Early model made in 1898 as experimental model (Number 9324). Perhaps some specialists of theses models have some more information for me .

This is a shortened S98aA, mostly in war period? anyway it was heavy polished mainly on pommel, the unit as 5.Garde Grenadier Regiment marked so the piece was full lenght and not rare piece, not even experimental as are S88/95 or S88/97, this piece has broken blade and was shortened, the serial is normal on very early production 98/99, its inventory number. Is certainly one of the earliest production. 9xxx was not trial. The scabbard is not proper as for S84/98nA bayonet not for S98, should be for blade with widened blade profile.

Not uncommon to find shortened S 98 bayonets as some were broken during WW1 and repurposed as trench knives, others shortened post WW1 when the S 84/98 was the preferred standard. Remember the S98 nA was made through to 1914. This one may well have ended up as "walking out" side arm, matched with an early S 84/98 scabbard.

I don't know if the sentence "experimantal model" is the perfect translation, but in german it's a "Versuchsseitengewehr". It's described in the book "Deutsche Versuchs- und Musterseitengewehre". And yes, it was broken at the time (that happens very often with this fragile model). And yes, this is a modified steel scabard of an 84/98 for the then shortend blade.

I would disagree with the author as the S98 was approved design by emperor in 1898 late of year, so the 98 production was already with normal approved design not Versuchversion, but i would look by Goetz book, the 9xxx is easy too high for a trial version, S88/97, 88/95 were made in 2000 range for unit testing before the S98 was approved. The W98 is scarce to find but W99 are normal to find, and 5 GGR means already some other 4 regiments were equiped, and that case a regiment has minimum 3000 numbers when not higher. The serialing on back tang continued into 99 and some already 00.Goetz reports in 1900 minimum 60000 rifles G98 made, when i remember correctly.
Correction of previous the Emperor Wilhelm II give the name Gew.98 on april 1898, the rifle as not enough finances by war ministry as compare to buying of Gew88 in 2 years, should be firstly tested and then rearmed prior to 1907 by all combat units.
And the scabbard looks like normall S84/98 WW1 period, what for modification is there?

I should say, after looking to Goetz and Ball books,i was wrong in my previous opinion, the sources speaks about 10000 of testing rifles made in 1898,so Yours S98aA should be made in that range.
Goetz speaks that it was firstly delivered to 1GR zu Fuss, Garde Jaeger and Garde Sch.Battalions (R.Williams book) and Inf.Schiess schule so evidently the 5GGR on Your piece was too one of the unit that tested in, anyway this is not mentioned by Goetz.
There exist many W99 samples wout the serial numbers so i assume already 1899 started a normal production of Gew98, but certainly not in large numbers.
I would tend to testing rifles designation as to experimental rifles, even remains for me 10000 pcs little strange ammount for testing.
