Help ID Russian? Short Sword

The blade of the Russian M1848 Tesak was longer and wider and, as mentioned a Russian specimen would be full of markings.

Here’s an example of a Bulgarian M1878, which is a copy of the Russian M1848.



I am afraid you are looking for a needle in a haystack. This type of foot artillery sword was in high fashion in a lot of countries during a large part of the 19th century and many countries had different models over time. I believe the French alone had around 4 different models over decades. The differences between countries, or the differences between the different models of one country often are small details. Just 3 pictures is not enough and the lack of markings does not help.

But I fear that even with a lot of detailed photographs and the full dimensions and weight, it will be a stroke of luck to identify it.

The Russians copied a fair number of French swords with some exact copies, and others having a few modifications. The French 'precursor' sword being the Model 1816 Artillery short sword with a 'fish scale' grip. The Model 1831 Foot Soldier short sword being a simplified version of the Model 1816. The Russians copied the Model 1831 in 1848, however it was preceded in 1834 by a sawback short sword with the French Model 1831 handle. Best Regards, Fred

Very true. Posted another (French heavy cavalry) example used by at least three countries.
