Here is a used copy of the third model / 3rd pattern, (Dritte Ausführung), which already has a very high production number (13433).

The highest number of a KM66 stamped on the handle that I have personally come across is: 14244
This serial number, which has been stamped consecutively across all three models of the KM66, was therefore called "Laufende Nummer" in the NVA.

A KM66 / Kampfmesser 66 with a matching numbered stamped box and even with a spare sheath loop and spare grip loop (which originally came in the box with the knife) is by no means impossible these days, but such complete sets are becoming more and more expensive to purchase! ...

In the meantime, there are even collectors who buy the KM66 not only based on the serial numbers /"Laufende Nummer" and the three different models / versions, but also based on different handle colors in different brown and red tones, which are production-related.

The handle is made from some type of molded plastic.

The 1st model of the KM66 had very poorly made (easily breakable) handles, the 2nd model had better handles but bad blades, and finally the 3rd model was quite well made and met the needs of the troops.

However, throwing the KM66 was not wanted because the handles are still very easily splintered and broken due to the very short tang cast into the handle.
