Probably someone bought some khaki webbing from a disposal store ( they have rolls of it ) to replace busted or rotted straps to make the lids able to be used - you wouldn't want to risk original stuff hanging of a carrier!!

Did wonder something like that. The helmets have that authentic feel about them. I’m trying to track down some info on how they came to be. They were in the carrier.
