Great stuff.... if they’re lift-the-dot they’re in. I seem to recal talk of two batches...mid ‘40s and early ‘50s tho may have remembered that wrong...........so 45 to 58 it is....unless..........
Almost right but not wrong either. There's no question there were two batches - the WW2 originals and the (roughly) Korean War (the early 50s dates). However, there are the surprising outliers - we now know of helmets dated 1956 and 1958 (may be other years I don't instantly recall). The early Fifties batch is (I'm guessing here as you can imagine) probably because of the uncertain outcome of the Korean conflict and a need to have enough of the modern helmets for general issue. The third set, in the 56-58 period, is harder to understand. I don't think invoking the Suez Crisis would be an adequate explanation. This is probably something like "is the HPLW actually made of ..." which will never be answered.
