I decided to go with a set of "sterling" marked pinback wings. I'm sure his awarded
wings would have been sterling and being that he earned them early in the 50s I'm
    guessing they would be pinbacks.

I pinned them to an original but unissued 10th airborne oval. This one is 1950s-60s vintage
so hopefully it is close to what this old guy would have had.
With any luck, I will be able to give them to him this week sometime.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out with this little project.

Gene came back into the shop today. He's been on a fishing trip to Canada.
(you would never guess that he is 90 years old)
So I presented him with his new wings today. It took him totally by surprise and the
look on his face was priceless. He said thank you 3 or 4 times and shook my hand.

My boss came out of his office a few minutes later and the old guy went up to him and
showed him the wings and said "Do you see what this guy did for me?" His voice cracked
just a bit and his eyes were watery. But just for a second.

He said that this would bring back a lot of memories and he related a story that during training,
they had a night time jump. They were allowed to skip Reveille the next morning. So after that he and
his team volunteered to do as many night jumps as they could.
