Good evening gents,
First of all I'm sorry if this is not the correct section (couldn't find one just for this type of ephemera) but I thought this is best to get maximun benefit from airborne insignia/gear specialists.
I got this signet ring with a few other pieces of US airborne insignia a while ago and just can't find any reference material to help me pin it down to period etc.
At first I though it had been fashioned from an actual para wing but now I am not so sure as it does seem a little too thick in section.
I have handled enough silver to be pretty sure that this is either silver or high silver content alloy even though it has no markings at all.
I do believe that rings like this have been an affectation of US para qualified personnel both serving and veteran but I would like to identify a period and possibly a likely source of manufacture eg factory, jeweller or base workshop sort of thing.
To give an idea of size, the ring itself fits me as a "pinky ring" and I take a size 9.5 - 10 glove so average "bloke" size and the insignia is as far as I can tell the same dimensions as the actual badge. The black in the creases/crevices appears to be black paint rather than dirt/tarnish.
Whatever its origin it is a very sriking piece and I can imagine it being popular with troops.
Any pointers would be much appreciated.
Thanks lads
Mark
