The J.B. Davis to me looks more like a stamped name by the marine itself, I'm in the marines myself and even to this day we're issued a little stamping kit with letters to stamp our names on items such as uniforms. If you look closely you can see a little ink line on top of the name that looks like it was done by one of the stamping kits.

Is the J.B Davis on both? my dumb speculation is that it could be a maker stamp? Hey while I'm here can ya please help me out on this pair? certainly cut down! maybe done for Australian use or USMC?

I'd say they are modified Vietnam era ones.
