Anyone know how the battle clasps were attached to the ribbon, do they open?

Good example of a WW1 victory ribbon, nice campaign clasp, possibly 32nd Division.

Thanks for the photo MAP, it appears that they would slide on, were the clasps added to the ribbon first and then the brooch was attached, otherwise how did the clasp get over it?

    Separate question -

Were different clasp sizes made for the miniature version of the medal, or could they also use the regular sized clasps?

Could stars have been added instead?

I really don't know the answers. I don't actively collect US awards. I'm sure someone else can provide a more definitive answer.
