Awesome portrait, and pleased to see you have resisted the temptation to court-mount them as so many do.
Who did he serve with? Artillery?

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

Its where the ribbons are wrapped around a supporting back board which extends half way down behind the medal discs. Google for images if you like.

Oz, I fully agree. ive never really understood why people court-mount medal groups. I wouldn't even replace the ribbons.
If you look at the medal group again, you will see that the 14/15 star and Vic medals in particular are hanging by a thread! the attempts to hold them on the ribbons with a bit of amateur needlework was at the hand of my grandfather. To me that is part of the charm and history of the group and almost as important as the medals themselves.
you can tell that he wore the medals with pride. and often!
