19th Century American Eagle Helmet Badge

I have this eagle plate that I've had for some time and am wanting to give it to a friend as a gift to thank them for some kindness they showed me. But I don't really know what it is. Can anyone tell me, and maybe some idea of worth.

It looks to be an infantry plate for a mid 1800s shako

I can't help with value, being civil war period it will be more than the more common 1881 badge, but opens up the possibility of reproductions also.

Thanks TinHat, I did some looking in he ACW era and found some that look like it, but as you say, perhaps mine is a repro? Or maybe it was also worn latter??? I don't want to give my friend a repro, so if I find that out, I'll just hang on to it and give him something else. Very much appreciate your help!
