I've come across this badge which seems fairly old. The pin on the back looks just to be slid on to a uniform, maybe shoulder or cuff.

It is a rank insignia to be worn on shoulder epaulettes. All officers’ badges on service dress were originally of gilding metal, except for rifle regiments and the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department, which used bronze instead.
Worn alone the insignia is for rank of Major. It is of course a King's crown so clearly 1st half of 20th century.
