Aiming trainer but what for?

Can anyone identify this item which would appear to be an aiming training device. It is articulated, one end arm is brass, the rest is japanned. Apart from the crossed hairs, it has a white graduated part that can be raised in front of the crossed hairs.
Any thoughts?

Possibly for an manned Aircraft machine gun?

Yes, it does have that look about it. I assume it’s to teach people aiming techniques in a classroom setting but that’s purely a guess.

Ok guys, problem solved, it’s actually a heliograph alignment tool - yeh, I wouldn’t have guessed that either. The IWM site shows one fitted to a heliograph.
