    Hello,
These nets were not absolutely used on D-Day, but sure during the Battle of Normandy.
It seems they used two nets to load and unload the engines like trucks.

Well, steel wire cargo nets do exist and have been around I think for as long as mechanical cranes, usually of a smaller gauge netting with larger gauge slings running diagonally from corner to corner.

They are used for lifting heavy loads such as machinery and large vehicles / locomotives for example that natural rope could not handle no matter how thick They are still in use today and are manufactured by specialist companies.

Whether they were used in Normandy during WWII I cannot substantiate but I don't see why not and I believe it quite likely that they were used to lift armoured vehicles etc.

I will keep my eyes open for period photographs.

    Regards
