One of my wife’s customers very kindly gave me his old “tool box” when he found out it was an old ammo box.
It’s a Lewis machine gun ammo box and unfortunately it would appear that the outside was stripped and painted silver as I can’t see see any trace of green on the outside, although it is present on the inside. It is missing it’s centre divider and leather carrying handle. What I found interesting was what appears to be the date “1942” (the last digit is difficult to identify) on the catch. All of the examples that I have seen are WW1 dated.
At present I’m not sure what to do with it, normally I leave things alone, however, it’s in a bit of a state and relegated to the shed at the moment. I’ve wiped it down in WD-40 to make sure that it is doesn’t deteriorate further.
