I believe that there were multiple different batches of the M4 made after the war. Not necessarily in exact sequence, the first seems to have been WW II bayonets that were overhauled and modified for the plastic grips. Then there was a batch by Camillus in the early 1950's. The Imperial ones a little uncertain because the M-2 carbines were given to the National Guard, and the Army still had some M-2's into the early 1960's before the M-14 rifles were fully distributed. Vietnam also a little uncertain because the early MAAG forces also had them (and M-14's) before the AR15's became the new standard. Which does not really make it any clearer because the Vietnamese received large numbers of M-2's as military aid. And if that was not confusing enough, Conetta also made the M4 (and M7). Hello,

the sequence of contracts for the production of the M4 after 1945 is known

    - 1953 Camillus Cutlery Co.
    - 1954 Turner Manufacturing Co.
    - 1956 Imperial Knife Co.
    - 1967 - 69 Conetta Manufacturung Co.
    - 1969 - ?? Bren-Dan Manufacturing Co.

Until at least 1967 it was possible in the US Army to order entire M4 and spare parts on the replenishment route.

Of course, older WK2 M4 veterans continued to be used and in some cases also repaired, revised and provided with new handles.

For example, handles made of wood and rubber were installed in the early 1950s.

Some of the last contracts were probably also sent as weapons aid. Parts of it have appeared in Italy and South Korea.

Even before that, old M4 stocks were used as weapon aid. The young FRG Bundeswehr received M4 from WW2 production, South Korea and the ARVN.

It's interesting that you mentioned South Korea. Some years back a lot of U.S. military aid items were sold to U.S. military surplus etc. dealers that included some M4 bayonets some of which had been modified. They were refinished ("Parkerized") in milspec type wrappings. The rubber and wood grips I think coming from Asia arrived at about the same time in greater quantities than seen previously. Conetta and Bren-Dan the same company after it went through some financial problems using the "roll (type) pins" in the pommel instead of the solid type. Best Regards, Fred

    Hello.

one has to differentiate between the rubber grips.

There are high-quality and precisely fitting ones that are said to come from revisions made in Japan in the early 1950s for the US Army. Together with the M4 with wooden handles, it was an attempt at the leather, which rotten under the climatic conditions and, on the other hand, the metal for
rust brought. In 1954, however, the decision was made to use two plastic grips.

On the other hand, there are rather rough and imprecise rubber grips. Most of them were probably imported back from South Korea. Among them were also M4 from Conetta with such a handle, which means that this change was made in Korea - or only - after 1967/69.
