Hi Bavarian,
Its for the M1 Garand rifle which was the standard US Army rifle of WW2.
Interesting that the bakelite grips didn't survive the ground.

It is a U.S. M1905E1, which is basically an MI905 16" bayonet that has be shortened to 10" around 1943.
It fits both the M1 Garand and the M1903 Springfield rifle in its various incarnations.
