    My Daughter has helped me find the following information for you on both Michał and Maria Karczmitowicz :

    The above confirm that Maria Karczmitowicz was born on the 23rd September 1910 and her husband Michał was born in either 1916 or 1917.

    After the end of the war he came to the UK and settled down to civilian life married and died in March 1996 in Birmingham

    Monte Cassino Cross Numbered : 14373

    By the end of the war in Europe he had been promoted to Kapral (Corporal), and awarded the KW (Cross of Valour) along with the Army Medal British 1939-1945 and Italy Star's, e died in 1990.

    Unit : 62nd Anti Aircraft Artillery Supply unit

    Monte Cassino Cross Numbered : 45705

    During the September 1939 Campaign he was serving in the Polish Army and was captured by the soviets on the 18th September 1939 in Monasterzyska, he spent nearly 2 years insoviet gulags and after the germans attacked the soviet union he was released under an amnesty and re-joined the Polish Army at Tockoje on the 2nd September 1941.

    After the end of the war in Europe, he came to the UK with his unit and after being demobbed from the Polish Resettlement Corps he settled down to civilian life in a foreign country, he lived the rest of his life in London and was living at 8 Ickburgh Road, London E5 when he died on the 6th March 1978 aged 81

    is there any evidence that Wojtek the bear was promoted to corporal?
    W jednostce nadano mu stopień kaprala.️
    I see this very often, mostly in Polish texts.

    All the above items come from one person Plut.pchor. Augustyn Zbigniew M Kozioł, when awarded the Monte Cassino Cross his details were as follows :

    Rank : St.Ulan. (Lance Corporal/ Cavalry)

    Surname : Kozioł

    Christian Name : Augustyn Zbigniew M

    Date of Birth : 15th August 1923

    Army Number : 1923-8-III

    Unit : PUK (Carpathian Lancers Regiment)

    Monte Cassino Cross Numbered : 38409

    He was also twice wounded once at Monte Cassino and secondly during the fighting for Ancona, by the end of the war in Europe he had been promoted to Plut.Pchor (Lance Sergeant/Officer Cadet). He had also received the KW and the BKZzM.

    He came to the UK with his Regiment and after being demobbed in 1948 he met and married Joyce Elliot in 1949 in Birmingham, Augustyn died in Mansfield on the 23rd August 2000, 8 days after his 77 Birthday.

    His ashes were taken back to Poland.
