    Default Polish Navy in Exile

After talking to Tony last night, I realized that the Polish Navy has not been covered extensively on this forum. Hence, I propose a new thread!

The contributions of the Polish Navy were quite significant. It fought with great distinction alongside the other Allied navies in many important and successful operations, including those conducted against the German battleship, Bismarck. During the war the Polish Navy, which comprised a total of 27 ships (2 cruisers, 9 destroyers, 5 submarines and 11 torpedo boats, sailed over 1 million nautical miles, escorted nearly 800 convoys, conducted well over 1,000 patrols and combat operations, sank 12 enemy ships (including 5 submarines) and 41 merchant vessels, damaged 24 more (including 8 submarines) and shot down 20 aircraft. Of the approximately 4,000 who served with the Polish Navy, around 450 lost their lives during combat.

To start off, I would like to share my most comprehensive set, which belonged to a torpedo officer and the last second-in-command captain of ORP Garland who saw action on the Atlantic, Mediterranean and North Sea escorting convoys to Murmansk (among other locations).

I have attached his medal grouping, tunic, visor and an invitation to join the Commander of the Brygada Strzelcow Karpackich for a Remembrance dinner in Latrun, 1940.

Here are some great books on the Polish Navy. Most of them are from 'seria z kotwiczka' which is a great series on maritime warfare.

Ah, I see a copy of "Polska Marynarka Wojenna" in the top right corner... The author knew my grandparents, and I have (somewhere!) letters, photographs etc from when he was serving in the Free French navy.

That one is a 1990's reprint, I have a original but I keep that one as a display one. Do you know his name?
From archiwumallegro I found a group that sold 6 years ago, it was a Polish Navy grouping to a sailor who was in the Free French Navy in 1939-41 and then transferred to the Polish Navy. It was nice because he earned a Croix de Guerre whilst with the FFN.

On a side note, does anyone here remember a Polish Navy Virtuti Militari that sold on ebay about 6-7 years ago. It was a numbered type, I think the saillor was on ORP Garland, might have been a casualty?

    Hi Dastier

I am fluent in Polish so I usually only get Polish books, I have been meaning to get this book for a while just haven't got around to it:

    Poland's Navy, 1918-1945 Peszke, Michael Alfred 0781806720 | eBay

I think this seller is a bit pricey, I have seen them go a bit cheaper.

For some really nice pictures of Polish Navy militaria visit:

Muzeum Marynarki Wojennej - wystawy czasowe

It is the Naval Museum's website.
