looks like a rotary engine starter cartrage probably american ian
mitchel,fortress type of plane
i supose you will have to search the net for us rotary engines ,or something like that, or B17 B25 engines perhaps
basically its just a big blank cartrige that turns the engine over fast enough to start it.
i know how and why it works but it would take a lot of typing to explane it to you cheers ian

It looks like a RAF Canberra starter cartidge, does it have somthing like Cart Elec Eng or similar on the base? I posted some info on this on the forum somewhere. There were also some photos of others.
