I don't know a thing about insignia but I checked here on the forum and woolgar says in post # 6 of this thread: Opinion on Edelweiss cap badge that there were 4 hole examples also.

They have been making these since the war ended, and using original dies in many cases.
(you could buy a "dealer's lot" from companies such as Unique Imports back in the 1970s--all advertised as "original, leftover wartime stock")
