Not only a rare cap but also branch piped! I think these facts answer the question. Even without better pictures, I believe this is a blatant 4th Reich product.

no "supposedly" all they did was put some cloth or something else red to make it look red eye and cooler it has nothing to do with the branch of service

Don't want to be an anorak but.............there is a photo in one of the many publications on headgear that shows a backing cloth behind the skull on an original cap. I am now trying to remember were I saw it.....
might have to go into my library now as i won't sleep till i find it................
