I would explore Finland or Sweden as possible origins. Possibly from the Finnish war ? Does the hat have evidence of a visor bill being removed at one time. It sort of looks like this one in the link without the bill

Ww2 finnish winter hat ?? Or post war

Thank you for responding. I do not see any evidence of a bill. The difference with the Finnish hat is that it has a flat top, this hat is peeked. I am curious as to the blue & yellow pin on the side.

Where else might I look? Switch to a different forum?

    Thanks,

    William

The pin is Swedish. I’m not and expert on Swedish stuff but most everything Swedish is marked with three crowns. I have seen many similar caps described as WWII Swedish winter caps

Certainly Swedish indeed, I believe there were many variations of these. They used to be widely available at surplus stores here in Finland just a while ago.

Here is some useful information on Swedish uniform pieces, check post #2: Swedish M1909 Style coats in use by the Germans

The sheepskin fur hat that went with the Livpäls is designated M/1904 (More correctly: M/1885-1904).
Later superseded by the M1885/04/09 (known as the M/1909) and the M/1910.
I am not aware of the exact differences between the different models, but they are all modelled on the older M/1885 fur hat.
