Is there any manual, or a battery diagram in the battery box?

If there is, it may give you a clue as to the power requirements.

I will have a look and post some pics tonight, maybe the batteries can still be found in the East?

They may be available, but old batteries, don't hold a charge for long. If it can be figured out what the units power requirements are, it may be better to get a battery house to make a rechargeable set of batteries, that will fit inside your battery box.

I did this with some of my period Soviet field radios. Now I have rechargeable batteries, that I can install in the battery box of the radio, use them, and when the battery dies, I can easily recharge it in about three hours.
