    Just picked these up.

First up - a 1939 dated MOD O-8 mask. The bag is 1941 dated and has two main compartments (and a tiny one for lenses or fog pencil). The button is unusual - the type normally found on NKVD uniforms. There are two wooden blocks beneath the canister to allow air circulation.

    Very nice finds

I have a couple of Cold War masks and I am on the look out for a good dated wartime set such as your examples.

Are the two colour schemes of the canisters reflective of the dates of issue?

    Hi Nick,

Difficult to say on the filters.

I'm pretty sure the green/vomit coloured paint has been used since the 1930s to today. This particular one's earliest inspection stamp is 1941. The grey one's earliest stamp is 1944.

Both of them have LMZ stamped into the metal. The factory (theoretically) dropped the logo LMZ in 1941 and became 'Factory 700' - i'm not sure that was ever reflected in the marking of canisters.

Like the grey colour of the bag (that could be for MPVO use), I think they used any dull colour that came to hand in the war years.

Hello folks. Thought I'd share a couple more gas mask bags for reference.

First up is a relatively rare model with side pockets. Note the spring as a spacer for the filter and the felt lined compartment for the mask.

Next up is a pocket-less model from around 1941 although the stamp is unreadable. Note the inside split of the mask compartment to accommodate the decontamination kit. The bag is made from poncho canvas and the leather buckle strap has been replaced.

Finally, for interest's sake, here's a picture to illustrate post war and war time strap arrangement. Top is post war which has a fiddly double buckle that makes changing the length harder. Wartime straps, like the one below are far simpler.
