Hi all, thank you for the messages ( especially Smitty and your once again very informative message and sorry for the delay ). We have been in touch with a military specialist auction house and mailed them photos yesterday evening. Just out of interest is there one that you all use or keep an eye on ? Whichever one that is chosen, then will be taking the flag to them for a personal viewing as we are looking for clarification sooner rather than later.
Our father was an antique dealer for over thirty years before his death. We to this day are still finding things that we have no idea about. The sad thing is that their were other things with this but we can no longer find what has happened to them.
    Kind regards again.

Once again, thank you all for your help and information regarding this item. Two military auction specialists have now viewed this and both are confident it is genuine. Within the next couple of weeks we are taking it up country to another specialist military auction house, where after they have inspected it, will be putting it in one of their auctions, probably in the new year. We will let you know what they say, kind regards.

Let us know what the others say.

As advised, an item like this certainly needs multiple opinions. I am being overly cautious in this thread as the term "specialist" is often used a bit liberally. In this hobby, there are many well rounded "generalists". I'm not knocking them at all as often they are correct "most" of the time. But a true specialist often only devotes his / her studies to very specific sector of this hobby such as Daggers, or awards, or uniforms, or helmets, insignia, field equipment, fire arms, visors/caps, flags, etc. etc. And even then, these sectors can be quite broad and one needs to focus on sub-sectors. Basically, no one person can fully be considered an expert in them all. Most well regarded auction houses will not rely on a single person. They will have at their disposal a number a consultants they reach out to for specific fields of study.

Have any of these two auction specialists given you any details supporting their view?

So as said above, I am just being overly cautious to ensure you get the right answer.
"Please", Thank You" and proper manners appreciated

Hi Guys, some of you may have noticed this thread disappeared for a few days.

I had good reason to soft delete it. Firstly, some information, no doubt posted in good faith, was factually incorrect. The first FOUR standards ONLY were constructed differently to the second pattern which made up the other 590 odd examples produced. One of these is shown in Ulrich's book. This was causing confusion.

We also got off track talking about other examples and various repro's.

I want to keep us on track for a very good reason. Having spoken to the owner of the standard and advised him of it's true worth and originality, I am very pleased to annouce it has been consigned to auction with me and will be the star lot of my Dec 8th Militaria auction here at Bamfords-auctions in Derby, UK.

Having got the item in hand it is a "textbook" example. You will see in the owners original photographs it appears to have a white substance all over it? This is in fact chalk. With permission, I have dabbed this off with a dry microfibre cloth and now the standard look much better in the photographs shown below.

The auction will go live in two weeks time. I will add a link once it is online.

    Cheers, Ade.

    Interesting.

So one question remains in my mind, how would a person who has the means to acquire a DE standard discern from those reproduced in the 1980's or 90's from that of an original DE that this example is purported to be?

I do not have the means to even think about bidding on one of these (a new mortgage could be had, lol) but in all seriousness, does anyone have an inkling on what those differences may be?

Adrian Stevenson, if this muddles this thread, perhaps a new thread should be started to have a discussion on the question I am posing.

The repro's done over the years do not come up to the standard of an original in terms of construction, materials and sewing.

    Cheers, Ade.
