Description: For sale is a very rare bronze plaque commemorating the completion of building work on 9th of January 1939 of the Reichs Chancellery in Berlin. The work started during March 1938 and the inscription thanks the workers involved in the construction.
I have contacted the German History Museum, who hold the original which is cast in iron, about this item and they told me as copies were made by German foundries, which were numbered on the rear, they discount this bronze plaque as a copy and had never seen a similar example in this gold colour.
They suggested it could well have been cast for the black market, which was rife in the years following the end of the war, and would account for the roughness of the finish on the rear of the plaque.
This was likely sold, or given, to a member of the British Army or RAF who transported it to the UK. This is conjecture of course but without any history it must be viewed as such.
Free postage within the UK.
