Default Merlin exhaust manifold.....or something else ??

    Hi all

What do you reckon to this piece? A friend of mine has just retrieved it for me from beneath a kids skateboard ramp, 'built' very close to an old RAF base. I am fairly certain it is an aircraft manifold and looks like a Merlin.......but can you help at all ?

    Hope you can

I shall be arranging to go pick it up very soon

Some examples of the more common exhaust arrangement.
I think these are the one's your thinking about Dave.

You'll have to excuse him. He's WELL old and forgets stuff all the time. Forgot where he lived the other day and spent 2 hours in someone elses front garden trying to open the front door.

Did you not remember the ones I dug a couple of years back Thanatos ? Picture below. Off a Packard built Merlin, P51 Mustang stubs.

Thankyou Dave, at least theres someone who shows some modicom of sense around here, and it wasnt someone elses garden . It was mine and i was using the wrong key, a normal and quite understandable mistake which anybody could make and it was dark because the council turn the street lights off, something that Steve is used to , living in outer mongolia as he does and only has the moon for lighting and the postman delivers letters by Yak, also it was only recently that he found a boulder large enough to cover the opening to his cave

Ok guys, I have the manifold now, and I've given it a clean. It needs an electric wire brushing but it's clean enough to show you now.

It doesn't look like a 50 series ejector because it has 3 exhausts leading to two ports. The 50 looks like a two exhaust to one port.

I have placed a standard Merlin engine exhaust stub gasket on the 'rusty' bits and it fits perfectly so I am confident it's off a Merlin. Trouble is.......which one and which aircraft ??

The damage I believe to be relatively modern and is probably plough damage. Interestingly though there is, on both sides, a small piece of steel welded over a hole in the port. This may help ID as it appears to be part of the overall design of the port. The steel itself is very high quality corrosion resistance stuff, showing very few signs of rust, except where it would have joined the engine manifold. There is a support strut inside the main body of the thing, and both outlets have a separator in the middle. I have not found any markings yet, but hopefully there will be some after a good going over with the lekky drill.

    Any help would be appreciated

Compare with the 6-into-4 setup on the Sea Hornet's Merlin 135: www.dhhornet50.net
