    An older Wächtler & Lange Brass Core EK1, would be my opinion.

    I'm not seeing any red flags with it. The pin, hinge and catch all say W&L. They were the commonest maker of the brass cores.

    No, that's only a myth. There is no evidence to support that theory, many crosses with magnetic iron cores have been found in KM groupings with provenance. The same with brass cores in non-KM groupings......

    Nick is right. The brass core Navy story was just concocted up to sell the crosses at a higher price, is all. The EK was Supposed to be made of only Iron for the core, but in the early days, many brass were also made-until the regulations became more strictly enforced. Some say that they used brass as it was softer and easier to stamp out, but who knows?
