What is with the strange 'brazing' marks, or whatever on the backs
of these two crosses you've shown ? They appear repaired or unfinished !

Looks like a mismatch of box and cross, as there are condition
issues with the cross and none to hardly any wear/staining
on the box, if it is indeed a good EKI set..........

Let others have a good look at these crosses, both the two cased
EKI's and two WMK's, and get a few more opinions.

Cross is original , it 's an unmarked Klein & Quenzer , untouched for 70 years because that black patina but where stayed I don't know , strange back side look.
Case seems ok but I 'm not so sure, pics don't let see any detail... it came not originally with that cross IMO.

Edit : my thought was this patina as an old patina but I have many doubts after seen the other one..

This is a very strange one. I agree with Fabri about the front being a K&Q but I've never seen such unusual heat marks on the back. It looks like the frames have been apart and then been resealed.

Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

It's hard to get clear pics of some of the details on these things but is there a good comprehensive guide out there to detecting fakes? I've seen a few but do you guys have a favorite guide that you could share with me?

Does a magnet test help detect fakes?

    Thnx

The best guides you could possibly have are Adrian, Fabri , Danny et al !

    And they cost very little

I have a few books at home but forums like this are priceless!

No. Early Iron Crosses had non-magnetic cores, i.e. brass, zinc, and so on. . .

Good question, for which I don't know the answer. . . Let me correspond with a more experienced Iron Cross collector who may know, and I shall report back. . .
