Any more info or ideas about the box would be welcome. I certainly won't be buying more Souval.

I consider box and cross wartime.
Do you have a UV lamp at your disposal?
With a good case nothing will glow, except for the bone based glue, which glows soft purple.
All the fake boxes I tested had the white cardboard insert between box and inlay shine like ehm, something shiny.

Souval caused a lot of dust, for sure. But the points Adrian mentioned are considered the period pros.
Most of the Souval post war copies are quite easy to tell. The use of old stocks makes it more of a challenge. A 100% agree on everything there will never be I think. But so much is already clear and facts keep surfacing.

I think you can be happy with cross and box.
