Re: Identifying soldier
Welcome Bob,
His name is Hans Schmidt and he was in the Luftwaffe as a 'flyer'. The collar tab and eagle are Heer (Army) pattern so unlikely to belong to the owner of the Soldbuch......
For more information I will leave to those who know their way around a Soldbuch.

Re: Identifying soldier
His Mother was Veronika Schmidt, born Heidrich in the town of Bad Ems. The street name is damaged, but it might be something like Furssenberg 19(?).
It looks like Hans went to Para school on 4th April 1944. I can't read the following entry.

Re: Identifying soldier
Has anyone noticed what appears to be a bullet hole through the centre of the soldbuch? Maybe one reason this was picked up as a macabre souvenir? Is it through and through Bob?
Regards, Ned.

Re: Identifying soldier
I thought that too Ned but a wartime bullet hole or postwar? Probably not on the guy at the time or we should see some claret stains.

Re: Identifying soldier
Maybe, maybe not....? I don't think the lack of blood neccessarily means it couldn't be so, the only real fact we can take from it is we'll probably never know.
