    Hi all,

Any chance of deciphering this group, belonged to an Austrian Flak soldier who managed to survive the war, sadly his brothers were KIA.

It appears that he may have been some kind of telephone operator ? He was in Italy for a while.

He has an issue of tropical gear, but I can't find any reference to awards, all help greatly appreciated.

    Best wishes

    Bob

For most of the war he served with Flakscheinwerfer-Abt 809 which started off being based in Luftgau VII before going to Palermo in Sicily in 1942/43 and following on from Op Husky he was located in Italy, both locations explain the issue of tropical uniform & equipment.

It doesn't look like he won any awards.

Hi, I’ve done a little bit of translating and it appears he was on Sicily then moved to the Italian mainland.

To find out what his role was, could you post a photo of page 20 and 21 from the Wehrpass. Page 20 will list any training with weapons he received from the military and page 21 will show further training information and recorded any special schools/courses he undertook. At the bottom of page 21 there is a space for recording awards.

A photo of page 22 and 23 from the Wehrpass will give his promotions and appointments, so this could also point to his role. Along with this, awards and decorations are also recorded at the bottom of page 23.

I can see on the first page of his Soldbuch that he was a Kanonier (An artillery private is known as a Kanonier in German). Then was promoted 1.10.1939 to Gef (Gefreiter), 1.11.1940 to Obergefreiter and then on 1.3.1944 to Stabsgefreiter.

Is there anything on page 34 of the Wehrpass. This is where you find any wounds and recognised illnesses recorded.

Hi Bob, thanks for the additional photos.

You were right, page 21 confirms he undertook a Fernsprecher course, which is a telephone operator.

Page 20 - He was trained on the karabiner 98k.

Page 22 - Confirms his promotions.

Page 34 - Is empty, so it looks like he wasn’t wounded or didn’t become sick.

    Will.
