The last piece of Otto's documentation I have is a pass ( one side in German and the other Russian ) issued at an resettlement camp ( Umsielager ) on 18th May 1947 allowing Otto to travel to his home district in Merseburg ( near Liepzig ) in the gebirge ( mountains ) This was ALL in the Eastern division of Germany.
Pure speculation – but I would like to believe the now 31yr old EK2 holder Otto Nitsch, with some Occupation dollars in his bank can now settle down with his young wife and child and live their lives out in peace after those horrific years of war …..

Really nice grouping, even if you dont own his soldbuch! It definitly still tells a story!
Edit: I researched a bit, as i thought the Name Nitsch does not sound as its that common. I found one Nitsch still living in Panzfelde (Now named Pansfelde), so it is possible he is a descendant of Otto, or atleast a family member, so lets hope for him he really was able to settel down!
That's very interesting to hear, thanks! I've always wondered if it is wise to dig up the past - as some family members may want to know, others obviously not! And who knows how my seller came by these documents? .... of course I would return them if they had been obtained illegally but sometimes the past is best left alone, rather than possibly open old wounds?

Well, you could always try. I personally would be happy if someone would come to me with military Items of my great grandfather, as i sadly have nothing except of his wedding picture in uniform, and a piece of the envelope (with the stamp of his camp) in which he send a letter out of a british prisoner of war camp.
He was not a fan of the National Socialists as far as i know and had some very grim memories of the war (I only know he told my mother of a soldier whose guts came out, after he got shot in the stomach, but he did not say much more.) so i think he got rid of everything remembering him about this time, except his wedding picture.
Its definitly not sure if he is indeed an relative, a website said that there are about 2300 Nitsch in germany, but still, as it is in the same Village chances arent too low they are atleast somewhat related.
