Wehrpaß Infanterie Regiment 282, 98th Infanterie Division. Gefallen
Dear fellow forum enthusiasts. I would like to post this thread on the Wehrpass of Josef Kühnl of 5th Kompanie, Infanterie-Regiment 282 of the 98th Infantry Division. If you have any additions I would be glad of your help. I hope you find it interesting.
Josef Kühnl was born in Arnitzgrun, today known as Arnoltov in the Czech Republic. His religion is listed as Roman Catholic. I'm not sure of his profession.
He enlisted on 22 September 1939 and joined the 5th Kompanie of Infanterie Regiment 282.
Deployment and subordination:
The 98th Infantry Division was set up on September 18, 1939, at the Grafenwöhr military training area by WW XIII as the 5th Wave Division. The division was equipped with Czech equipment. Additional personnel came from WK V and HGr. southern Poland. The division was to be operational by November 1, 1939. The 13th companies of the regiments were heavy grenade launcher companies. After the formation was completed, the division moved to the Saar Palatinate to secure the western German border.
In May 1940, as part of the western campaign, the division advanced from the Speyer area via St. Quentin, the Oise-Aise Canal and the Aise to the Marne. This crossed the division at La Ferté south of Jouarre. During the second part of the western campaign, the division marched across the Seine at Fontaine le Port, the Loire at Sully and the Cher to the Indre. After the western campaign, the division was put on leave from August 1940 to February 1941. When it was recalled on February 28, 1941, the 13th companies of the infantry regiments were converted to Infanterie Geschutz companies using manpower from the 215th Infantry Division. The division then lay in France as an occupation force and took part in the Russian campaign from June 22, initially as an OKH reserve. From Zamosc the division advanced via Lutsk, Zhitomir, Malin and Korosten to the Dnieper, which it crossed at Gornostaipol. This was followed by fighting south-west of Chernihiv and the breakthrough through the Desna position. The division then advanced across the Ugra to the Moscow defensive position near Detschino. After breaking through the protective position at Maloyaroslavets, the division advanced across the Protva to the Nara southwest of Moscow. Here she was stopped by the Russian winter offensive. From November to December there were defensive battles on the Nara and between the Protva and Shanya as well as in the area of Maloyarislavets and Medyn.

Here is a section of the Lage Ost map for 31st July 1941 showing the position of 98.ID and their Soviet opposition. On the 1st August 1941 they had moved slightly to the northwest.
