The line on top translates as:
"Exercise at the Wahner Heide from 20 April through 20 May 37."
[The Wahner Heide [Wahn Heath] is an area of land near Cologne, parts of which were used in both world wars as a military training ground, military airfield and POW camp. Its military use dates back to 1817.]
Bottom left:
" Barracks at the Wahner Heide"
[See above.]
Bottom right:
"Chilling in the field"
[Admittedly, a rough translation. The "Lenz" here comes from the colloquial phrase "Sich einen faulen Lenz machen". Literally "To have oneself a lazy Lenz", it roughly means "to hang around doing nothing". "Lenz" is both an archaic term for "spring" and the short form of the Christian name "Lorenz". The origin of the phrase is not clear and it is not known with certainty whether the "Lenz" mentioned refers to the former or the latter meaning of the word.]
Awesome information HPL. I actually had seen this photo on an old thread on another forum a long time ago(I think maybe Axis History forum?) and had remembered that members were calling it a Romanian sports badge.....so when I saw the photo for sale, I jumped on the opportunity to buy it! Interesting that it is comparable to the SA Sports badge, since it almost looks like it too. Im interested in the Foreign Legions of TR book you have referenced. Im surprised that there were such a little number of these badges awarded, but then again...Im guessing most (non-foreign) Germans would have normally rathered the SA sports badge instead. Im also surprised to hear that members other than the Foreign Volksdeutsche were enabled to take the "sports" test to acheive the badge. You would have thought it would be for Foreign Legion Soldats only.
Sorry, I should have phrased this more clearly.
Just to avoid confusion: This was a badge of the ethnic German community in Romania, so "any German" was referring to any German living in Romania, whether he was an E.S./D.M. member or not.
(German citizens resident in the Reich and ethnic Germans in foreign countries other than Romania would not have worn this badge.)
Hi Bill, super photo showing the Leistungsabzeichen.
Hi HPL, here is another one for you with the badge just peeking into the photo.
Cheers, Ade.

Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.

But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader
