The gates of hell were opened and we accepted the invitation to enter" 26/880 Lance Sgt, Edward Dyke. 26th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers , ( 3rd Tyneside Irish )

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader
House Carles at the Battle of Hastings
Sorry, Mo, but no: It says "Dampferfahrt" = "steamer ride". (Obviously not at that precise moment, though.)
[Puts on obnoxious teacher's hat] By the way: The exact word Pferdfahrt does not exist anyway; it would have to be "Pferdefahrt", which is not a horseride, but a ride in a horse-drawn vehicle. Also, its grammatical gender is feminine, hence "Die Pferdefahrt".
Try as I might, I can't make out the second word:
"Brennende [...] auf Flugplatz
BEI ALKMERKE"
...i.e.:
"Burning [...] on airfield
NEAR ALKMERKE"
I cannot find a place named "Alkmerke" (which does not sound Russian anyway); the closest I can come up with is Almkerk in the Netherlands.
"Heim zu unseren Mädels" = "Home to our girls"
