Digging in Moldova?

Does anyone know if there was any fighting during ww2 in Moldova? Now I mean the country, not the Romanian state.

Going there for work for 1 year and I am thinking of bringing the detector....

If i were you i would have brought along the detector. You will probably find so much ancient treasures you will be suprised. I do not know how the law is in this country, but if it is legal then i envy you the experience.

Well I am going next year so I have almost 1 year to get a license, and I heard from a Romanian friend that it is very possible to BUY a license to digg and use metal detector in Moldavia.

But I have been searching the internet and can find no information about WW2 in Moldova, and on the wiki side they do not even cover 1939-1945... Very strange.

Will be there for 1 full year working as a volunteer with EVS (European Volunteer Service) at a animal shelter and the hours are not bad so will have loads of free time, would be perfect if I could buy a car and go 'round the country on my free time doing some digging! Seems like the country is pretty much UNDUG as I can find no info about diggers there....

The Moldova is one of the forgoten lands in the Ex-USSR, I think there not a lot of peoples who search for such a items, at least at the Russian forums I\ve never heard about the detecting in this area. At least I know that in the past in Moscow - "Gastarbaiter" was assotiated with Moldavian workers, despite now looks they found cheaper hands from Tadjikistan etc. I suspect you need to take it with you.

How are u doing? I haven't heard from Timmy but I suspect that he did not clean he's panzer assault badge yet. I cleaned my K98 and signal round casings :P Actually the signal round casing is really nice with german text on it.

I have been really busy lately as I bought 39 SS LAH feldpost letters from a soldier that died in Normandie August 1944, real interesting stuff! As you see I am trying to find out more about Moldavia..... Would be nice to digg there. With Timmy and u on my side ofc... What are u up 2?

I resisted in a robery and got a knife in my hand :P But still got my wallet so it was worth it.

Yeah it deppends, some soldiers write more about personal things but some write a lot about the life where they are. The problem is that not many people know gothic german and it can be hard to read the handwriting. I have a lady translating my letters for me, and it is not free... But worth it.

Anyway I have been searching the internet for Moldavia in ww2. It is really strange that no info can be found. I guess maybe there was no fights there, it is not impossible because it is quite an small area. Will keep looking and report back if I find something..


PS: I should not have let Timmy sign my cast while I was watching TV.... He gave me black wound badge, that will be nice to explain for doctor -.-

In August 1939, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and its secret additional protocol were signed, by which Nazi Germany recognized Bessarabia as being within the Soviet sphere of influence, which led the latter to actively revive its claim to the region. On June 28, 1940, the Soviet Union, with the acknowledgement of Nazi Germany, issued an ultimatum to Romania requesting the cession of Bessarabia and northern Bukovina, with which Romania complied the following day. Soon after, the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (Moldavian SSR) was established, comprising about 70% of Bessarabia, and 50% of the now-disbanded Moldavian ASSR.

As part of the 1941 Axis invasion of the Soviet Union, Romania seized the territories of Bessarabia, northern Bukovina, and Transnistria. Romanian forces, working with the Germans, deported or exterminated about 300,000 Jews, including 147,000 from Bessarabia and Bukovina (of the latter, approximately 90,000 perished). The Soviet Army re-captured the region in February–August 1944, and re-established the Moldavian SSR. Between the end of the Jassy-Kishinev Offensive in August 1944 and the end of the war in May 1945, 256,800 inhabitants of the Moldavian SSR were drafted into the Soviet Army. 40,592 of them perished
