[I] am by no means an expert of this topic, so please bear with me. A Google search of radium vs. phosphorus reveals that the deterioration of radium means that radium will no longer glow. There could be some scattered small pockets that would glow, but quickly fade as soon as the light source is removed. That is why watch dials and hands needed to be repainted after a few years. On the other hand, phosphorus will continue to glow for much greater periods of time, and will continue to glow when the light source is removed. Degraded radium will not. Since radium is radioactive, and phosphorous is not, I believe a google search on the subject is well warranted.
